The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) has appealed to the government to provide transport and financial subsidies to support its efforts in delivering legal aid, training and justice services across the country’s seven legal zones.
Speaking during the opening of the TLS Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Arusha on May 8, 2025, TLS President Boniface Mwabukusi emphasised the urgent need for government support to enable the organisation to fulfil its legal responsibilities effectively.
“TLS is requesting the provision of transport for all seven legal zones, along with financial subsidies to facilitate the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign. This support is crucial for reaching more people in need, particularly those in rural areas and individuals living outside the formal justice system,” Mr Mwabukusi said.
He revealed that through such legal aid initiatives – conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs – TLS had successfully reached 25 regions, 179 councils, 1,907 wards and a total of 5,702 villages and streets.
Mr Mwabukusi reminded participants of the significance of this year’s theme: “Elections and the Rule of Law: A Call for Legal Oversight and Accountability in Tanzania’s Electoral System.”
“This theme urges us to reflect on our responsibilities as legal professionals and leaders in safeguarding citizens’ rights, promoting peace and strengthening democracy,” he stressed.
