Morocco and Madagascar will meet in the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) today (Saturday) setting up a historic showdown in Nairobi.
The Atlas Lions, who have already lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020, booked their place after edging past Senegal in a dramatic semi-final last Tuesday. The match ended 1–1 before Morocco held their nerve to win 5–3 in the penalty shootout. Their consistency and tournament experience once again underlined why they are considered the team to beat.
Madagascar, meanwhile, produced one of the most remarkable stories of the competition. Reduced to ten men early in their semi-final against Sudan, the islanders showed extraordinary resilience. Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe struck deep into extra time in the 115th minute to seal a victory and send his nation into their first-ever CHAN final.
Speaking after the match, Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe said: “We played with heart, discipline and belief. Nobody gave us a chance, but the players refused to give up and now we are in the final. This is history for Madagascar.”
Morocco coach Hicham Dmiai praised his side’s composure, saying: “It was not easy against Senegal, but our players showed character. We respect Madagascar, they have shown great courage and we know we must be ready.”
The final at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi is expected to draw thousands of fans from across the continent, with Morocco seeking a third title and Madagascar hoping to crown their fairytale run with a maiden triumph.
The tournament is jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
