HOW MUCH SCREEN TIME IS TOO MUCH FOR CHILDREN?

In today’s world, screens are everywhere. From televisions and tablets to smartphones and computers, children are growing up surrounded by digital devices. While technology has many benefits, including learning tools and educational games, parents often worry: How much screen time is too much for children?

Health experts generally recommend that children under the age of two should have little to no screen exposure, apart from occasional video calls with family. For children aged two to five, screen time should be limited to about one hour a day of high-quality content. School-aged children may have more flexibility but even then it is important to balance screen use with physical activity, adequate sleep, and face-to-face interactions.

Excessive screen time has been linked to several health and developmental concerns. Physically, it can contribute to eye strain, poor posture, and reduced physical activity, thereby increasing the risk of obesity. Mentally, too much screen time may affect attention span, reduce sleep quality and interfere with emotional regulation. Socially, children who spend most of their free time on devices may miss out on developing vital communication and problem-solving skills.

That does not mean screens are entirely bad. When used wisely, technology can enhance learning. Educational programmes, interactive apps and supervised online activities can support schoolwork and even foster creativity. The key is for parents to set healthy boundaries and remain actively involved in what their children watch or play.

Practical steps can help families strike a balance. Create “screen-free zones” such as the dining table or bedrooms to encourage conversation and better sleep. Encourage outdoor play, reading and family games as alternatives to passive screen use. Most importantly, be a role model – children are far more likely to adopt healthy screen habits if they see their parents practising them too.

Ultimately, the question is not just “how much screen time is too much?” but also “what kind of screen time is taking place?” Quality matters just as much as quantity. By guiding children towards positive, educational and age-appropriate digital content – while ensuring there is enough time for sleep, play and family – parents can help their children grow up healthily in a digital world.
