Two Rotary Clubs have joined hands to strengthen learning environments in Arusha through the donation of 200 new desks and benches to local government schools.
The initiative is part of an ongoing campaign, “A Seat for Every Child – Creating Leaders for Tomorrow,” implemented by the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam. The Rotary Club of Arusha, which has sponsored School WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) programmes in Arusha primary schools, partnered with the Dar es Salaam club and corporate supporter Tata Tiscon of India to provide desks.
The desks were handed over early last week to Azimio Primary School and Uhuru Primary School, two of Arusha’s busiest public schools, where overcrowding and shortages of classroom furniture remain persistent challenges. The occasion was held at the Kibo Hotel in a well-attended handing-over ceremony.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Rotary District 9214 Governor Christine Kawooya said the donation reflected Rotary’s long-standing commitment to improving education in Tanzania.
“This donation is more than furniture — it is an investment in our children’s dignity and their ability to learn in a safe, comfortable environment,” said Governor Kawooya from Uganda.
“When we support education, we uplift entire communities. I am proud of the collaboration between our Rotary Clubs and partners in making this possible for schools in Arusha.”
She added that Rotary will continue championing initiatives that support the region’s most underserved learners.
“Every child deserves a proper desk and Rotary will continue working to close these gaps across Tanzania,” she said.
Representatives from the Rotary Club of Arusha echoed these sentiments, highlighting the immediate impact the desks will have on teachers and learners.
“Our classrooms are overcrowded and the need for proper furniture is overwhelming,” noted Rotary Club of Arusha President Ralph Williams. “These desks will directly improve learning conditions for hundreds of pupils.”
Corporate partner Tata Tiscon, which co-funded the initiative, said the project aligns with its vision of supporting long-term community development.
“Education is the foundation of tomorrow’s workforce,” a Tata Tiscon spokesperson said. “We are proud to collaborate with Rotary to create safer and more comfortable learning spaces for young Tanzanians.”
Education officials in Arusha welcomed the contribution, calling it a timely boost that will immediately improve classroom environments.
