We arrived in Mererani around noon and caught sight of a Martial Eagle high in the sky over its preferred territory. Eagles are known to rule the skies, each shaped by evolution for a specific form of dominance.
It all happened while we were birdwatching. As we walked along the riverbank, we were fortunate to witness a breathtaking moment: a Martial Eagle snatching a Nile monitor lizard. We followed the magnificent bird as it soared, circling high above, at times almost invisible to the naked eye.
In the distance, near a shrub, we noticed a large reptile that had made the mistake of crossing the dry riverbed in broad daylight, presenting a rare opportunity for the eagle. In a swift, slanting stoop, the bird descended and struck. The powerful predator seized the lizard in its talons. The reptile hissed loudly and lashed its tail like a whip, striking back with force. It was quite a struggle, as the Nile monitor, measuring about 1.5 metres, is known for its strength and aggressive temperament.
The eagle continued to subdue its prey for over 30 minutes before finally breaking its neck. It then lifted the lifeless lizard to the top of a tall acacia tree where the victorious bird began savouring its hard-earned catch.
The Martial Eagle is one of the most formidable aerial predators of the open savannah and woodlands. It is often seen alone or in pairs. With a wingspan of 190–220 cm, it cannot easily manoeuvre through dense forests and therefore prefers open landscapes. Remarkably, these powerful birds have been recorded preying on duikers weighing up to 32 kg, often returning repeatedly to a kill site to feed.
In contrast, forest-dwelling eagles have proportionally shorter wingspans and rounded wing tips, enabling them to navigate through dense canopies.

All birds of the eagle family possess strong talons, which they use to grip prey in flight and they typically consume their catch in trees. Vultures, however, cannot carry prey in this way; they feed on the ground and take flight afterwards.
It was our good fortune to witness this remarkable Martial Eagle and its successful hunt of a Nile monitor lizard.
