A new book for young climate leaders!
Roots & Shoots is proud to announce the arrival of an inspiring new educational resource for young people in Northern Tanzania.
The Future is in Our Hands, a new book by the Greenmanjaro Foundation in collaboration with Roots & Shoots, illuminates the path for young minds, inspiring awareness, courage, and action in the face of climate change.
In recent months, 1,500 copies of the book have been distributed to secondary schools within the Roots & Shoots clubs across the Northern Zone, thanks to the generous support of the Dutch sponsor, Stichting Pharus.
This initiative forms part of the newly launched Kili Lighthouse Educational Programme by Greenmanjaro Foundation and provides the educational theme for the upcoming Kili Kids Climate Festival, taking place on the 23rd and 24th of May at Silverleaf Academy, USA River. The Festival is organised in partnership with Roots & Shoots Tanzania @rootsandshootstz and Afrisos @afrisos. This unique event brings 1500 secondary school children together under one roof during 2 fun-packed days to empower young minds, amplify their voices, and spread their call to action about adapting to climate change. Specially designed for secondary school students aged 13 to 16, The Future is in Our Hands offers an engaging and accessible approach to environmental education. Rather than a conventional textbook, it is a vibrant extra-curricular guide, crafted to empower and encourage students to understand the beauty and urgency of protecting their environment.
The book comprises twelve dynamic units that directly link real Tanzanian environmental challenges, from the melting glaciers of Kilimanjaro to issues of sustainable waste management, with broader climate change themes. In addition to theoretical knowledge, students are encouraged to undertake practical, hands-on activities such as tree planting and vegetable gardening, equipping them with tangible skills for creating a greener future.
Further enriching its educational value, the pilot edition also features a ‘Tips & Tricks Manual’ for teachers, filled with supplementary insights and exercises to enhance learning experiences. The Future is in Our Hands is currently under review for endorsement by the Tanzanian Institute of Education (TIE).
