ARUSHA, KILI BRACE FOR ONSET OF LONG RAINS

By The Arusha News Reporter

The much-awaited long rains for Arusha and surrounding areas are expected to begin this coming week and intensify gradually into March, ending the prolonged dry spell that hit most parts of the region this year.

According to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), warm conditions will persist in the early part of the week, with daytime temperatures ranging between 28°C and 30°C. However, rainfall is expected to gradually intensify into March.

“We are observing a seasonal shift towards the long rains, commonly known as “Masika”. While the first few days may see isolated showers, the frequency and intensity of rainfall is expected to increase as we move into March,” said a TMA official.

Lowland areas around Moshi and most of Kilimanjaro region, are also expected to experience similar weather pattern, with relatively hotter daytimes at between 29°C and 32°C. Authorities say farmers should take advantage of the anticipated rains to prepare their fields.

“The onset of the long rains is crucial for agriculture across northern Tanzania,” the official added. “However, communities in flood-prone and low-lying areas should remain alert in case of heavy downpours.”

Meanwhile, the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro are expected to become wetter and less stable as the season progresses. Tour operators and climbers have been advised to monitor weather updates closely as increased rainfall could affect visibility and trail conditions. Mount Kilimanjaro is a major global tourist attraction visited by thousands every year.

The long rains typically extend from March through May and play a vital role in replenishing water sources and supporting crop production across the region and much of the country.
