Shock and grief have gripped Manushi-Kibosho Village in Moshi Rural District, Kilimanjaro region, following the brutal murder of a three-year-old boy, Ivan Chuwa, in what police believe was a ritual killing linked to superstitious beliefs, in pursuit of wealth.
The killing occurred on August 15, 2025 at Makao hamlet, where it is alleged that the suspect, Bahati Kiria, acted on the advice of a witchdoctor, Severina Mafoi, who told him that sacrificing a child would bring him wealth, prosperity and success in life.
Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC), Simon Maigwa (pictured), confirmed that both suspects were in custody. “We are conducting a thorough investigation. Once completed, legal action will be taken against the suspects,” he said.
The murder has left the community reeling in shock. Neighbours described young Ivan as a lively and joyful child. Mrs Esteri John, a neighbour, said: “Ivan was always cheerful and full of life. We were devastated when he went missing and even more heartbroken to learn of his cruel death.”
The child’s parents, speaking in tears, said they were struggling to come to terms with their loss. The late young Ivan’s father, John Chuwa, recalled: “The last time I saw my son, he was playing happily in the yard. I never imagined our neighbours could betray us in this way. We have lost our joy because of one person’s greed. I hope justice will prevail.”
His mother, Agnes John, added: “Ivan was my source of happiness and hope every single day of my life. Now he is gone because of superstitious beliefs. I pray God to give us strength and I urge the government to see this case through so that justice can be done.”
The killing has reignited public concern over ritual-related crimes, which have been reported in several regions over the years, despite the ongoing government crackdowns. Villagers in Moshi are now calling on authorities to act swiftly to ensure justice is done and to step up efforts against such harmful practices.
