EAC SUMMIT PUSHED TO NEXT YEAR

The 25th East African Community (EAC) Heads of State Summit, initially scheduled for December 6, 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, has been postponed to a later date, sources within the regional bloc have told The Arusha News.

According to the sources, who requested anonymity, the postponement comes against the backdrop of recent and ongoing electoral developments across several partner states.

They cited the just-concluded General Election in Tanzania, which witnessed heightened political tension, as well as Uganda’s forthcoming General Election in January, 2026, which is attracting significant national focus. The sources also pointed out that Kenya is currently conducting multiple by-elections, adding to an already crowded regional political calendar.

The postponed Summit had been expected to consider several high-level agenda items, including a review of progress towards the establishment of the EAC Political integration — the ultimate phase of the bloc’s long-term roadmap.

Another key agenda item was the election of a new rotating Summit Chair. The tenure of Kenyan President William Ruto has come to an end and under the EAC’s rotation, the next in line would be the current Rapporteur of the Summit, the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

However, sources noted that the rotation has, in the past, been adjusted based on consensus among Heads of State, meaning the final decision may still vary.
