MANDATORY TOURIST INSURANCE COMING, HOTEL LEVY SLASHED FROM 10 TO 2%

From The Arusha News Reporter in Dodoma

The government on Thursday tabled the national budget for the 2025/26 fiscal year, amounting to TSh 56.4 trillion up from TSh 49.3 trillion in the 2024/25 financial year.

Among several new measures introduced in the Finance Bill is a proposal to make it mandatory for all tourists visiting Tanzania to purchase local insurance for their entire stay. The bill also reduces the Hotel Services Levy from 10 percent to just two percent.

The move, according to the Ministry of Finance, aims to reduce the cost of tourism and increase competitiveness within the region while ensuring that tourists receive emergency medical support when needed. “This will also improve our revenue collection from the growing number of international visitors,” Finance Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba told parliament.
