Arusha city is geared for major facelift following the construction of roads, markets and bus stations under the Tanzania Cities Transformative Infrastructure and Competitiveness Project (TACTIC), that shall upon completion cost a total of Sh 51 billion.
Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Authority (TARURA) Arusha District Manager, Eng. Godfrey Bwire, told The Arusha News that the projects include the construction of a total 10.2 kilometres of road. These are Oljoro Road (1.45 km), Olasiti Road (3.96 km) and Ngoselotoni Road (4.8 km). The works have reached 72 per cent completion at a cost of Sh 20.7 billion.
He added that TACTIC is also financing the construction of the new Kilombero Market, a modern intercity bus terminal at Bondeni City in Murieti Ward and the redevelopment of Kwa Mromboo into a proper market area. These projects were at six per cent completion, costing Sh 30.6 billion, Eng. Bwire said.
Acting Arusha City Director, Dr Maduhu Nindwa, said the council has welcomed the projects with open arms, stressing that they will benefit individuals, the city, the region and the nation.
“We received these projects with gratitude to the government for responding to our urgent infrastructural needs. The Kilombero Market, the Kwa Mromboo market and the Bondeni City Road will directly boost business and trade,” he said.
Dr Nindwa pointed out that the roadworks will also improve social services, especially education and health. He explained that better access will make it easier for students to get to schools on time and enable timely ambulatory services to hospitals, especially for mothers and children. “That will directly contribute to reduce maternal and infant deaths,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Oloresho Suburb Chairman, James Stephano, said the Oljoro Road rehabilitation has revived roadside businesses that had shut down due to poor road conditions. “After the road was reconstructed, customers returned and businesses have resumed,” he said
