TENGERU – MERERANI ROAD TO BE TARMACKED

BY THE ARUSHA NEWS REPORTER

The 28-kilometre Tengeru-Mererani road is set to be upgraded to tarmac level as part of major infrastructural improvements ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship, which Tanzania will co-host with Kenya and Uganda. The move follows a directive by Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, to the Ministry of Works to commence immediately the construction of the strategic road. The PM was in Arusha on an official visit recently.

The upgrade is expected to ease traffic congestion in and around Arusha city, provide an alternative route for motorists and improve the connection between Tengeru, Mererani and surrounding areas. The road also serves key economic activities including tourism and mining, particularly the world-famous tanzanite, a gemstone found only in Tanzania.

Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Godfrey Kasekenya, told the media that the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) will engage three contractors simultaneously to expedite completion of the project in time for AFCON 2027. According to officials, the works form part of a broader transport upgrade programme in Arusha Region linked to preparations for the continental football tournament.
