Two tense, low-scoring semi-finals at the St. Cons Two tense, low-scoring semi-finals at the St. Constatines Ground last week, delivered drama and set up a highly anticipated final between Telugu and MCC. In the first semi-final, Annadil Burhani ‘B’ struggled after being put in to bat, managing just 58 runs in 11 overs. Telugu’s bowlers dominated proceedings with Sandeep T returning impressive figures of 3 for 7, Vinay Kumar taking 3 for 11 and Harshil Patel finishing with 3 for 21. Taher Aziz was the lone resistance with 22 runs. Chasing a modest target, Telugu were made to work hard. Despite early setbacks, they managed to reach the total within 11 overs, thanks largely to Muthu Shankar’s 21 runs. Annadil Burhani’s bowlers fought back bravely, with Taher Nurbhai claiming 4 for 6 and Huzeifa Seifuddin taking 2 for 23, but Telugu edged through by three wickets. The second semi-final saw MCC post a competitive 102 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs against A to Z. Jainam Patel anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 57 while Dushant Singh was the standout bowler for A to Z with figures of 2 for 23.
In reply, A to Z faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 85 in 17 overs. Aneesh Jeeprson led MCC’s bowling attack with 3 for 15, supported by Jainam Patel’s 2 for 11. Mahipal Patel was the only batsman to show some resistance, scoring 17 runs, as MCC secured a 17-run victory. Telugu will now face MCC in the final next week.

Health diaries by Dr Lulu. C In today’s digital w Health diaries

In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere—phones, tablets, televisions and computers. While technology has made learning and entertainment more accessible, excessive screen time in children has become a growing concern for both parents and healthcare professionals.
Understanding how screen use affects children is essential for promoting healthy development. Young children, especially those under five years of age, learn best through active play, exploration and human interaction. Too much screen time during these early years can delay language development, reduce attention span and limit social skills. Children who spend long hours on screens may also become more irritable, less focused and less physically active. Another important concern is sleep disturbance. Exposure to screens, particularly before bedtime, can interfere with sleep patterns. The blue light emitted from screens affects the body’s natural sleep cycle, making it harder for children to fall asleep. Poor sleep, in turn, affects mood, behaviour and school performance.
Excessive screen time is also linked to childhood obesity. Children who spend more time sitting with devices are less likely to engage in physical activity. In addition, screen use is often associated with unhealthy snacking, which can contribute to weight gain over time.

Kilimanjaro Region recorded the highest number of Kilimanjaro Region recorded the highest number of cancer cases among five population-based registries surveyed between 2019 and 2023, according to newly released findings from the Ministry of Health. The Tanzania Cancer Registry report documented 16,516 cancer cases over the five-year period across registries in Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Mbeya and Dodoma. Of those, Kilimanjaro accounted for 6,161 cases, representing 37.3 per cent of the total recorded cases. The registry profile shows prostate cancer as the leading cancer among men in Kilimanjaro with 940 cases, while cervical cancer was the most common among women at 611 cases. However, when adjusted for population size using age-standardised incidence rates (ASR), Dodoma recorded the highest incidence rates for both sexes. Kilimanjaro ranked second for males and fourth for females among the five registries. Health experts note that higher case numbers in l Kilimanjaro may partly reflect stronger diagnostic capacity and reporting systems, particularly around the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, which serves as a major referral and oncology hub for northern Tanzania, including Arusha Region. Although Arusha does not yet have a population-based cancer registry included in the national report, many patients from the region are diagnosed and treated through facilities linked to the Kilimanjaro registry. The ministry emphasised that cancer registry data are essential for planning, monitoring and evaluating national cancer control programmes, including screening and early detection initiatives. Medical professionals stress that early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes, while cautioning that cancer comprises many different diseases requiring varied prevention and treatment approaches.

The Prime Minister (PM), Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, has w The Prime Minister (PM), Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, has warned that growing external influence on Tanzanian youth was undermining patriotism, calling for urgent strengthening of public education to safeguard national identity. Speaking in Arusha at the opening of the 110th WASHITIRI Conference, he urged stakeholders to intensify efforts in promoting national pride, unity and responsibility.
“Our youth today are easily manipulated. Nations that lose direction first lose their sense of nationhood,” he said.
Dr Nchemba also raised concern over malpractices in the mining sector, noting that some Tanzanians obtained licences only to transfer them to foreigners, enabling tax evasion and mineral smuggling. He called for more innovative communication of government achievements, the national vision and long-term development plans to keep citizens well informed. “Public education plays a critical role in instilling national pride and ownership. We must clearly explain our development journey,” he said.
The PM added that the government will strengthen oversight of the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) to expand coverage and enhance digital platforms to better reach young audiences. He further revealed that a new framework will require public leaders to address citizens’ concerns and submit monthly performance reports.

Police in Arusha Region have heightened security m Police in Arusha Region have heightened security measures to ensure a safe and peaceful Easter holiday season. Christian faithful across the region and the world in general are marking the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, signalling the end of Lent, a 40-day period of repentance and fasting, seeking God’s atonment. Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC), Justine Masejo, has called on the public to celebrate responsibly and in full compliance with the laws and regulations of the country.
“Parents and guardians should ensure that children are under close supervision and are not left to celebrate far from their watchful eyes ,” he told The Arusha News by telephone. This year’s Easter festivities coincided with mid-term school holidays as well as the commemoration of Abeid Amani Karume Day, observed on April 7. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and safety throughout the celebrations.
