More than 700 runners are expected to take part in the second edition of the Clean Cooking Half Marathon, scheduled for tomorrow at the Nane Nane Grounds, according to Noreen Mawalla, Executive Secretary of the Tanzania Business Women Association (TABWA).
The event, first launched in Dar es Salaam last year, aims to raise awareness about clean cooking technologies and their role in improving health, mitigating environmental impact and empowering women. The initiative is part of a national campaign spearheaded by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to promote sustainable household energy solutions.
Speaking during a press conference earlier this week, Arusha Regional Commissioner Kenani Kihongosi urged residents of Arusha and neighbouring regions to turn up in large numbers to support the marathon and its cause.
“Let’s support the cause of the marathon to promote clean cooking,” he told journalists, calling the initiative a step forward in ensuring healthier families and a cleaner environment.
Mawalla also encouraged the public to participate and cheer on the runners. The marathon will feature 21 km, 10 km and 5 km races. In addition to the sporting events, there will be demonstrations showcasing the benefits and use of clean cooking technologies.
