The Arusha-based East African Community Think Tank Association (EACTTA) has extended its congratulations to Tanzanian cardiologist and health policy expert, Prof Mohamed Yakub Janabi, following his recent election as the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Regional Director.
Prof Janabi was elected during a special session of the WHO Africa Regional Committee, convened to select a new nominee following the untimely passing of RD-elect Dr Faustine Ndugulile in November, 2024.

“This is a deeply significant achievement for the region,” said Dr Gerson Fumbuka, Secretary General of EACTTA. “Prof Janabi’s election is a testament to his exceptional leadership, his decades-long dedication to public health and the trust the continent places in his vision.”
Prof Janabi, born in 1962, has served as Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Tanzania’s largest referral hospital and is currently a senior health advisor to President Samia Suluhu Hassan. His distinguished career spans over 30 years, with contributions that cut across clinical excellence, public health reform and health systems strengthening.
EACTTA also commended the WHO Africa Regional Committee for its transparent and consultative selection process and expressed its readiness to work alongside Dr Janabi in advancing regional cooperation on health.
“We look forward to supporting him as he champions inclusive health policies that leave no African behind,” Dr Fumbuka concluded.
