WORLD CHAMP SIMBU TARGETS BOSTON GLOR

Tanzania’s world marathon champion Alphonce Simbu (pictured) will step onto one of the sport’s grandest stages next month when he lines up for the Boston Marathon.

He will be joined by compatriot Magdalena Shauri. The two athletes are currently in intensive training in Arusha ahead of the April 20 showdown.

Simbu returns to Boston with unfinished business after a superb second-place last year. With growing confidence following his historic gold medal triumph at the World Athletics Championships marathon in Tokyo, where he clocked 2:09:48 to become the first Tanzanian to claim the title, Simbu has firmly set his eyes on Boston.

The Boston Marathon is expected to feature a formidable line-up of global stars, including defending champion John Korir of Kenya, marathon powerhouse Benson Kipruto, Olympic silver medallist Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and experienced Ethiopian contender Lemi Berhanu. American hopes will rest on top names such as Conner Mantz and Galen Rupp adding further depth to an already elite field.

The men’s race is particularly deep with 10 runners having personal bests under 2:05 and dozens under 2:07 making it one of the strongest Boston fields ever assembled.

Simbu’s coach, Antony Mwingereza, has expressed confidence that his athlete is ready for the challenge, noting that early preparations were key given the quality of opposition expected in Boston.

For Tanzania, the race also carries historical significance.

Legendary runner Juma Ikangaa came agonisingly close to victory, finishing second three consecutive times between 1988 and 1990, but never managed to claim the Boston title.

Now, with form, experience and momentum on his side, Simbu will be aiming to go one step further and finally bring Boston Marathon glory to Tanzania.
