During the first year of life, babies should respo

During the first year of life, babies should respond to familiar voices, smile, babble and make different sounds. By around 12 months, many babies can say simple words such as “mama” or “dada” and respond when their name is called.

By two years of age, most children begin putting two words together. By three years, they should be speaking in short sentences, and most of what they say should be understandable to familiar adults.

Some early warning signs that should prompt a medical assessment include:

• Not responding to sounds or to their name.
• Not babbling by around nine months.
• Not saying meaningful words by 18 months.
• Not combining two words by two years.
• Having difficulty understanding simple instructions.
• Losing speech or language skills they had previously developed.

Speech delay can occur for many reasons. Some children have hearing problems that make it difficult for them to learn words. Others may have developmental conditions, neurological disorders or difficulties with the muscles used for speech. In many cases, however, the cause can be treated once it is identified.

Parents can also support their child’s language development at home. Talk to your child throughout the day, even before they can speak. Read storybooks together, sing songs, describe everyday activities and encourage conversation.

Limit screen time, especially for children under two years of age, as children learn language best through face-to-face interaction with people, not screens.

When it comes to speech development, early action is always better than waiting.

A reader of this column, I believe, sent me an art

A reader of this column, I believe, sent me an article by one Pan Africanist, Nana Yaw Boakye Yiadom Opoku Agyemang of the “Let Truth Be Told Alliance” (LTBTA), which celebrated the life of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and how ‘a sleeping continent betrayed his dream’ of a United States of Africa (UnSA).

That article used the 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026 of the independence of the United States of America (USA) from Britain on July 4, 1776 as its “entry point” to write at length how Africa did not understand what the Osagyefo (Saviour or Redeemer in Ghana’s Akan language) was out to do for the continent, otherwise Africa would today be ahead of the USA.

“Africa never fully understood or finished what Nkrumah started. If we had, with the land, the people, the wealth we carry, we would be ahead of America today,” wrote Agyemang. Truth be told, that is an over exaggeration. There can be no doubt that Nkrumah was a great African visionary but to be a visionary, is not the same as being a strategist!
Nkrumah was a poor strategist or rather, someone over consumed by his own views and abilities, which in the end, became his unmaking.

To liberate Southern Africa, Nkrumah had proposed the formation of an African High Command (Army) that would engage the colonisers and the Boers in South Africa, directly. Julius Kambarage Nyerere of Tanzania differed with that approach.

Nyerere argued and rightly so, that people could not be liberated by others and be handed freedom on a golden platter! Colonised and oppressed people could only liberate themselves. What others could do, was at best, to give a struggling people, both support and rearguard, Nyerere argued.

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has pledged to strengthen fair and professional tax administration as it reviews its performance for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The annual performance review meeting, which was held at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) last week, brought together TRA officials to assess achievements, challenges and strategies for improving tax collection and taxpayer services.

TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda said the authority would continue promoting voluntary tax compliance by building trust with taxpayers and ensuring that taxes are administered in a fair and professional manner.

Mr Mwenda said the meeting would also focus on how TRA will implement directives issued by President Samia Suluhu Hassan during the authority’s 30th anniversary and the President’s Taxpayer Awards held on July 1.

He said TRA would continue respecting taxpayers while taking lawful action against those who deliberately evade tax.
“TRA will continue to respect all taxpayers,” he said, adding that those who avoid paying tax would be handled according to the law, but with professionalism and respect.
Mr Mwenda also cautioned against unfair tax practices (dhulma), saying the authority would not allow what he described as “oppressive tax”.

He also said taxpayers should not cheat the country by evading tax while TRA should also avoid burdening taxpayers through incorrect assessments.

According to him, improving voluntary compliance requires public confidence in the tax system. He said that confidence can be strengthened through fair administration, responsible use of tax revenue and better services that make it easier for businesses and individuals to comply.

Mr Mwenda said cooperation between TRA and taxpayers had contributed to strong revenue growth over the past three decades. He said annual tax collections had increased from about Sh 21 trillion to Sh 37.96 trillion, representing growth of more than 77 per cent.
