We normally hear the expression “be a person of action and not of words.” While this makes sense, the power of words, written or spoken, cannot be underestimated. The Quran says God teaches the human being by means of the pen. The Gospel of John begins with The Word of God and the Word being God. The revelations of the world’s major religions came to us as words. It was the words of Krishna that transformed a broken Arjuna to rise up and defeat his enemies in the battle of Kurukshetra. It was the words of Al Husayn that stood upto the tyranny and oppression of Yazid and his army. And it was the words of people like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King that created phenomenal movements that tore down an empire and discriminatory laws respectively.
Jesus said, “by their words they shall be justified and by their words they shall be condemned.”
Words can be positive and constructive. Or they can be negative and destructive. What we say to others affects them and what we say to ourselves affects us. When learning and studying, be sure to use positive words on yourself if you’re a student and positive words to your students if you’re a teacher.
Words can be positive and constructive. Or they can be negative and destructive. What we say to others affects them and what we say to ourselves affects us. When learning and studying, be sure to use positive words on yourself if you’re a student and positive words to your students if you’re teacher, as often and as regularly as possible. The right words can create the right environment conducive to learning. The wrong words can do just the opposite.
Jesus said, “by their words they shall be justified and by their words they shall be condemned.” Words are in essence thoughts, carrying meaning, purpose and emotions. They lead to actions. Our words, and thus actions, either justify us or condemn us.
So I say, be not just a person of action. Be a person of right words and right actions. As a result of those right actions and those words. For history has shown us time and again, that words have the power to alter destiny. Therefore, choose your words wisely.
