MADINA EYES NAIROBI GOLF NEXT MONTH

FROM THE ARUSHA NEWS REPORTER IN NAIROBI

Arusha’s golfing star Madina Idd, who finished second last year, will be among the leading contenders at the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Open in Nairobi from April 10 to 12.

The three-day 54-hole stroke play tournament is expected to attract between 70 and 100 participants drawing a strong field from Kenya and the wider region, including Tanzania.

Defending champion Joyce Wanjiru will be among the players to watch following her victory in last year’s edition where she secured the title with a total score of 226 (+10) at Ruiru Sports Club. Wanjiru is expected to face stiff competition as she seeks to retain her crown.

Madina finished second last year, just one stroke behind the winner, underlining her status as a serious title challenger heading into this year’s tournament.

Other key Kenyan players expected to feature include Ashley Awuor and Vicky Elias, both of whom have consistently performed in KLGU events and remain strong contenders in the Golfer of the Year (GOTY) Kenya series.

The KLGU Open is one of the premier events on the Kenyan amateur golf calendar and carries World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points further raising the stakes for participants seeking international recognition.

With Royal Nairobi Golf Club known for its demanding layout players will be tested on accuracy, course management and consistency over the three rounds.

The tournament is also expected to reinforce growing regional competition in women’s golf, with increasing participation from neighbouring countries highlighting the sport’s development across East Africa.
