SOUTHERN WINTER IS HERE

Residents of Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Manyara regions have been advised to prepare for the just ushered in cooler season, with some areas expected to experience actual southern winter conditions, which shall last from June to August.

Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) said the period was expected to bring low temperatures, cloudy mornings, strong winds in some areas and occasional off-season rainfall in parts of the northern highlands.

“We are continuing to monitor closely the weather systems and we will issue further information as the situation develops,” said Director General, Dr Ladislaus Chang’a.

Members of the public are advised to wear warm clothing, protect children and the elderly and avoid length exposure to cold night air. Those with flu, coughs, asthma or breathing problems should seek medical attention early.

Motorcyclists and vehicle drivers should also take extra care during drizzles, windy or misty conditions, especially in July. Farmers are advised to protect young crops and seedlings from cold stress, especially in low-lying and highland areas where temperatures may drop further at night.

Livestock keepers should keep animals in warm, dry shelters and ensure calves, chicks and weak animals are protected from cold winds.

Farmers should also watch for crop diseases that may increase during cloudy and damp conditions, improve drainage in fields and follow guidance from agricultural extension officers before planting or applying pesticides.
