Home favourite Bernard Singoyan of the Arusha Gymkhana Club held his nerve to win the boys’ singles title at a national junior under-12 tennis tournament organised by the Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA), last weekend.

Twelve-year old Singoyan, class seven Sekei school pupil, edged Daniel Kiliani of Makongo Tennis Club of Dar es Salaam in a tightly contested final, earning a much-deserved 6/4, 7/6 (10/8) victory that set the tone for Arusha Gymkhana Club’s strong showing in the two-day tournament which had attracted 40 players from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Dodoma.

The win was part of a dominant overall performance by the host club which claimed multiple titles across the boys’ and girls’ categories.

In the boys’ doubles, Singoyan added another title when he partnered with Eagan Dzidzornu to overcome Daniel Kiliani and Zion Thomas. The pair sealed another hard-fought 6/4, 7/6 (10/8) victory.

Arusha Gymkhana’s success continued in the girls’ singles final where Janeth Massawe outclassed her colleague Faraja Mbise easily 6/1, 6/0.

Massawe also played a key role in the girls’ doubles with Highness Mfinanga.

The tournament Director Nicolas Leringa said the event showed high potential of junior talents in shaping Tanzania’s future tennis expectations and which needed encouragement.
