New York City.
Sweden’s Andreas Almgren and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won the men’s and women’s titles at the New York City Marathon last Sunday, November 1, as the event celebrated the 50th anniversary of its five-borough course.

Almgren, the world half-marathon champion, claimed victory on his marathon debut in 2:06:01. Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa finished second in 2:06:14 followed by Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo in 2:06:26.

Chepkirui secured her second New York title in 2:24:36. American Jessica McClain took second place in 2:24:42 edging Kenya’s defending champion Hellen Obiri, who finished third in 2:24:43. McClain became the first American woman to reach the podium since 2018.

Former international marathon champions joined the anniversary celebrations, including Tanzania’s Juma Ikangaa and American Bill Rodgers.

Ikangaa won the 1989 New York City Marathon in a then course-record time of 2:08:01, securing one of Tanzania’s most celebrated distance-running victories.

His return, 37 years after that triumph, honoured his place in the race’s history
