President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Mr Massana Gibril Mwishawa as the new Conservation Commissioner of Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), placing a seasoned conservationist at the head of the country’s national parks sustem
Mr Mwishawa, who has served TANAPA for more than three decades, replaces Mr Musa Nassoro Kuji. Before his appointment, he was Deputy Conservation Commissioner responsible for Conservation and Business Development.
His career began in 1993 as a park cadet and has included senior roles in park protection, anti-poaching operations, tourism development and protected-area management. He has previously led Rubondo Island and Serengeti national parks and later supervised several parks in the Eastern Zone.
Following his appointment, Mr Mwishawa pledged to strengthen wildlife protection, improve staff welfare and promote professionalism across the authority. He also identified better infrastructure, stronger cooperation with surrounding communities and closer engagement with tourism investors as key priorities.
The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, urged him to uphold discipline, accountability and integrity within TANAPA, while ensuring that employees receive the support and equipment needed to perform their duties properly.
Mr Mwishawa now takes charge of an institution responsible for managing Tanzania’s 21 national parks, which remain central to both conservation and the national tourism economy.
