Arusha city recorded a strong showing at the 2026 Local Government Authorities Games (SHIMISEMITA) which concluded in Mbeya last Saturday. Arusha City Council returned with three trophies and three athletics medals. Arusha District finished second in women’s handball after losing 10-7 to Rungwe District Council in the final. Rungwe were crowned overall champions after collecting six trophies and 29 medals, helped by dominant performances in athletics and handball. The council finished first in both men’s and women’s athletics and also secured the overall athletics title.
Ifakara District Council won the men’s football title after defeating Geita District Council on penalties, while Iringa Municipal Council beat Dodoma City Council 3-0 to claim the men’s volleyball championship. Dodoma City Council won the men’s handball title with a 9-6 victory over Geita, while Kakonko District Council defeated Bunda Town Council 48-39 to win men’s basketball. Arusha City will host next year Shimisemita Games. The SHIMISEMITA games, held from August 15 to 29, brought together local government authorities from across Tanzania in various sporting disciplines.
