FROM THE ARUSHA NEWS REPORTER IN ZANZIBAR
Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan (80), husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar.
Vice-President, Dr Deogratius Ndejembi, announced that Mr Ameir died at around 8:00 a.m. at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.
Mr Ameir, who married President Samia in 1978, largely remained away from the public spotlight despite becoming Tanzania’s First Gentleman when his wife assumed the presidency in March 2021. He was also known for his professional contribution to the agricultural sector and academia.
He was laid to rest in Kizimkazi, South Unguja, with senior government, political and religious leaders attending the funeral.
The Arusha News conveys its heartfelt condolences to President Samia and the bereaved family, on behalf of the Editorial Team and all its readers.
