WHO PROTECTS THE CONSUMER?

WHEN LAND BECOMES MORE VALUABLE THAN LOVE

WHEN ADVERTISEMENTS PROMISE HEAVEN

Have you ever bought a lotion promising to remove dark spots in seven days, only to find the spots still celebrating their existence after a month? Or a health product promising men extraordinary horsepower, yet the only thing increasing is the seller’s income?

Well, businesses are free to advertise their products, but they are not free to mislead consumers. In Tanzania, the Fair Competition Act, Cap. 285, prohibits misleading and deceptive conduct and false representations about goods.

Consumers have rights too. If a product does not match its advertised description or the seller makes misleading claims, consumers can seek assistance from the Fair Competition Commission or the relevant regulator.

The next time an advertisement promises miracles, remember: your money is real, and the promises should be honest. Businesses sell products, not fairy tales!
