Arusha is set to welcome about 2,000 delegates for the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) with preparations finalised ahead of the gathering.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to open the assembly, scheduled for Monday, October 5 to 9, at the Arusha International Conference Centre.
Hosted by Tanzania’s National Assembly, the meeting will bring together parliamentary speakers, legislators and parliamentary staff from across the world.
Discussions will focus on strengthening good governance and empowering communities through inclusion, trust and opportunities for all.
Delegates will also consider parliamentary measures to promote the rights and empowerment of people with disabilities, alongside meetings addressing human rights and other international issues.
The assembly will elect a new IPU president to succeed Tanzania’s Dr Tulia Ackson, whose term ends in October.
The gathering is expected to increase demand for accommodation, transport, restaurants and tourism services, providing business opportunities for Arusha residents and service providers.
