Tanzania recorded 5.9 million tourist arrivals as at the end of 2025, the highest number of visitors ever achieved, as the country accelerated efforts to position itself among the world’s leading travel destinations.

The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ms Ashatu Kijaji, said the record was the result of deliberate government action to strengthen the country’s tourism attractions.

“Tanzania’s tourism potential is now translating into real growth. We will continue to improve services, expand promotion and attract more visitors to our unique destinations,” the minister said in Arusha last week when launching ATM 2030 (eight million by 2030) campaign.

The milestone reflected sustained growth in both international and domestic tourism, reinforcing the sector’s role as a major contributor to economic growth, employment and foreign exchange earnings.

Ms Kijaji noted that continued collaboration between the public and private sectors will be key in maintaining momentum and ensuring long-term sustainability. The rise in visitor numbers has been supported by enhanced international marketing, improved connectivity and sustained global interest in Tanzania’s natural and cultural attractions.

Analysts said the next growth phase would depend on continued investment in infrastructure, improved service delivery and a strong focus on sustainability to protect the country’s natural assets
