For pupils at Nalopa Primary School in Arusha, a v For pupils at Nalopa Primary School in Arusha, a visit by Dr David Ole Sankok brought a personal lesson in pursuing ambitions: The Kenyan legislator shared how a childhood experience of disability helped shape his journey into medicine and public service.

Speaking at the school in Njiro recently, the Kenyan representative to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) encouraged pupils to take their education seriously, maintain discipline and reject discrimination against people with disabilities.

Dr Sankok, who acquired his disability while in primary school, drew on his own experiences to emphasise the importance of dignity, respect and equal opportunity.
“All of us have civic duty to treat people with disabilities with dignity and respect. They are human beings like others and have talents like others, too,” he told the attentive pupils.
During an interactive session, pupils shared their dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, pilots and engineers, among other professionals.

Dr Sankok encouraged them to work towards their goals, reminding them that education and good conduct were important foundations for their future. He also urged them to avoid alcohol, smoking and drug use.
He led the pupils in prayers and pledges to uphold good conduct.

Dr Sankok promised to connect Nalopa with a school in Narok, Kenya, to facilitate exchange visits and give pupils opportunities to learn from one another.
During his visit, he also met the school’s patron, Amb Daniel Ole Njoolay, for discussions on education and human development.

A new study has highlighted colorectal cancer amon A new study has highlighted colorectal cancer among young adults in northern Tanzania after doctors documented three patients aged 19, 28 and 29.

Published on September 1, 2026 in the Journal of Surgical Case Reports, the study said one patient died following surgery while later another required palliative chemotherapy. “Delayed presentation, limited diagnostic resources and restricted oncology services significantly impacted care,” the researchers said.

The patients experienced symptoms including rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain and unexplained weight loss before being diagnosed. Two were found to have mucinous adenocarcinoma, while one had another form of adenocarcinoma. The paper did not specify the exact period when the patients were treated.

While doctors do not know the exact trigger for every case, the disease is linked to a mix of lifestyle habits, health conditions and genetic factors. Eating a lot of red meat, including pork or eating a diet low in fibre, fruits and vegetables, raises the risk. Other factors include obesity, inactivity, smoking and heavy alcohol consumption, which damages the cells lining the colon or rectum.

The research  conducted by Mujaheed Suleman, Jay Lodhia, Evance Salvatory Rwomurushaka, Felister Uisso and Alex Mremi who are affiliated to the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), KCMC University, Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute and NSK Hospital in Arusha.

The High Court in Moshi has upheld a finding of de The High Court in Moshi has upheld a finding of defamation against former Rombo MP Joseph Selasini, but reduced the compensation payable to former NCCR-Mageuzi chairman James Mbatia from 150m/- to 100m/-.

Delivering judgment on October 13, 2026, Judge Safina Simfukwe found no reason to overturn the trial court’s conclusion that Mr Selasini had defamed Mr Mbatia. However, she considered the damages excessive and reduced the award by 50m/-.

“I am of the same opinion that the respondent succeeded to prove his claims against the appellant. All elements of the tort of defamation were positively proved against the appellant,” the judge said.

The appeal arose from Civil Case No. 8723 of 2025 at the Rombo District Court at Mkuu, which had awarded Mr Mbatia 150m/- in compensation.

Judge Safina said the trial magistrate “did not leave any stone unturned” when resolving the issues before the court. She concluded that Mr Mbatia had proved his case on a balance of probabilities, the standard of proof required in civil proceedings.

During the appeal hearing, Mr Selasini challenged the trial court’s financial and territorial jurisdiction to hear the case. He also contested the basis and amount of the damages awarded.

The High Court upheld the finding of liability but determined that 100m/- was sufficient compensation for the false and defamatory statements made against Mr Mbatia.
