Arusha is expected to welcome about 2,000 delegates from around the world when Tanzania plays host of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union from October 5 to 9, 2026.
The meeting will bring together Speakers of Parliaments, legislators, parliamentary officials, diplomats and representatives from IPU member countries. It is expected to be one of the largest international gatherings held at the iconic Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), this year.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officially open the assembly, which will focus on major global challenges facing parliaments and citizens, according to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Mussa Zungu, who was in Arusha recently on an inspection visit.
Key topics will include international conflicts, climate change, the cost of living, artificial intelligence, digital governance, democracy and inclusive economic growth. Participants will also discuss ways of improving the participation of women, young people and persons with disabilities in political and parliamentary processes.
The event is likely to benefit Arusha’s hospitality, transport and tourism sectors, as hotels and other service providers prepare for the arrival of international visitors.
The gathering will also strengthen Tanzania’s position as an important destination for high-level diplomatic and international conferences, added the Speaker.
