TANAPA REOPENS MT KILI TREKKING

FROM THE ARUSHA NEWS REPORTER IN MOSHI

The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has announced the reopening of Mount Kilimanjaro climbing routes that were temporarily closed because of a wildfire, a public notice dated October 8, 2026, said.

The routes re-opened are: Lemosho,Londorosi and Rongai.

Located in northern Tanzania, the Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level. Its three principal volcanic peaks are Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. The mountain’s landscape includes forests, heath and moorland, alpine desert and the arctic summit zone.

Kilimanjaro National Park was established in 1973 and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 1987 in recognition of its exceptional natural features.

The mountain is an important part of Tanzania’s tourism economy. Visiting climbers generate income through park fees, trekking services, accommodation, transport and purchases from local suppliers. These activities support guides, porters, cooks and businesses serving visitors.

International tourism also brings foreign exchange into Tanzania, while spending around the mountain helps sustain local livelihoods. Restoring access to the affected routes therefore has significance beyond climbing, supporting the wider network of workers and businesses that depend on mountain tourism.
