Fossil and genetic evidence increasingly suggests that our species did not emerge from one isolated corner of the continent. Instead, different populations across Africa appear to have remained separated at times and connected at others, meeting, migrating and interbreeding over many thousands of years. East Africa played an enormously important role in this story, but it was part of a much wider African evolutionary landscape.
Homo sapiens emerged as a distinct lineage approximately 300,000 years ago. Among the oldest known fossils associated with our species are those from Jebel Irhoud in Morocco, dated to approximately 315,000 years ago. Their discovery helped transform the traditional picture of a single East African birthplace into a more complex, pan-African story of human origins.
Life for our early ancestors was demanding and often dangerous. Humans shared the African landscape with formidable carnivores and other potentially dangerous animals. Hunting also carried considerable risk, while approaching rivers and lakes brought people into the territory of crocodiles and other wildlife.
Survival depended increasingly upon intelligence, adaptability and co-operation.
Toolmaking provides one remarkable window into this development. The ability to select suitable material, strike it deliberately and create an effective cutting or hunting implement required increasingly sophisticated technical skills and planning. Importantly, stone-tool technology had already existed for millions of years before the emergence of Homo sapiens. Our species inherited an ancient technological tradition and continued to develop it.
It was, in a sense, an early technological arms race: Better tools provided new ways to obtain food, process carcasses and respond to the challenges of a changing environment.
Meat and nutrient-rich bone marrow formed part of the diet of some earlier hominins long before Homo sapiens appeared. Archaeological evidence shows that ancient hominins used stone tools to process animal carcasses, including accessing meat and marrow. Whether through hunting, scavenging or a combination of strategies, exploiting animal resources became an important part of the broader human evolutionary story.
Adaptability was another powerful advantage. When environments changed or resources became scarce, human populations could alter their behaviour, exploit different foods, develop new technologies or move into new landscapes. Over immense periods of time, this extraordinary behavioural flexibility would help Homo sapiens occupy environments far beyond Africa.
Co-operation was equally important. Communication undoubtedly played a major role in increasingly complex human societies, although exactly when fully developed spoken language emerged remains one of the great unanswered questions of human evolution. Unlike bones and stone tools, words leave no fossil record.
From these ancient African beginnings emerged one of the greatest journeys in natural history: The long march of humankind.
It is a story of intelligence, adaptation, co-operation, migration and our ever-changing relationship with the natural world. Ultimately, it also provides an extraordinary backdrop against which we can explore our modern understanding of wildlife and the roots of conservation.
