DAKAR 2026: AFRICA’S YOUTH, AFRICA’S FUTURE

DAKAR 2026: AFRICA'S YOUTH, AFRICA'S FUTURE

BY ADAMA DIENG

On October 31,2026 Senegal offered Africa and the world a moment of pride. The spectacular opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar was more than a celebration of sport. It was a declaration of confidence in Africa’s creativity, organisational capacity and, above all, its youth.

For the first time in history, the Olympic movement has brought its Games to African soil. The colours, music, artistic performances and extraordinary enthusiasm at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium reflected a continent rich in talent and determined to shape its own future.

Credit must be given where it is due. From President Macky Sall, under whose leadership Senegal secured the Games, to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, whose administration has carried preparations through to this historic moment, the country has demonstrated the importance of continuity in national ambition. The organisers, volunteers, artists and countless Senegalese citizens also deserve our congratulations.

But beyond the spectacle lies a deeper responsibility. Africa possesses the world’s youngest population. Its youth must not be celebrated merely as the promise of tomorrow. They are citizens of today, entitled to education, opportunity, dignity and a meaningful voice in decisions shaping their lives. Sport can inspire discipline, solidarity, inclusion and peace. Yet the true legacy of Dakar 2026 must extend beyond stadiums and medals. It should be measured in opportunities created, talents nurtured and young lives transformed.

Senegal has shown that Africa can host the world with confidence and distinction. The greater challenge is to ensure that every African child can dream with equal confidence. The Olympic flame will eventually be extinguished. Our commitment to Africa’s youth must never be.
