CAF RESTORES TWO YEAR AFCON CYCLE

CAF RESTORES TWO YEAR AFCON CYCLE

Cairo.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, restoring the tournament’s traditional two-year cycle.

CAF announced on October 29 that its Executive Committee unanimously approved the reversal, following a review of the change adopted last year.

President Patrice Motsepe said the decision would protect African football, its 54 member associations and African players employed by clubs outside the continent.

The review followed concerns that the proposed Africa Nations League would need several years to generate sufficient revenue to support CAF competitions and football development.

The new competition had been intended to replace AFCON as a tournament held every two years under the previous restructuring plan.

Motsepe signalled the reconsideration during CAF’s strategy conference in Cabo Verde from October 7 to 9.

Next year’s championship will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Further editions are scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033, meaning the 2027 tournament will not be the last.

CAF said the revised approach would support football development while celebrating Africa’s diverse cultures and bringing communities together.
