Family, friends and members of the legal profession will bid farewell to veteran Arusha advocate Alute Mughwai Lissu on Monday, ahead of his burial in Singida on Tuesday, November 10,2026.
Late Mughwai, 72, died on November 1, 2026 after a prolonged illness. His family said he had been receiving treatment at Selian Hospital in Arusha.
Family spokesperson Dr Vincent Lissu, announced that Monday’s farewell service would begin at 1pm at St Theresa Catholic Church in Arusha. The body would then be taken to Mahambe Village in Ikungi District, Singida Region, for burial.
An evening service at the deceased’s home is scheduled for Sunday, November 8.
During a legal career stretching over four decades, the late Mughwai worked in public service before establishing himself in private practice. He graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1982, served in the Attorney General’s office in Arusha and began independent practice in 1990. His areas of work included constitutional and administrative law.
For fellow Arusha lawyer Mr Method Kimomogoro, his influence extended beyond the cases he handled.
Mr Kimomogoro, whose friendship with Mughwai dated back to 1985, credited him with helping establish the standards that guided his own career.
He said Mughwai expected advocates to arrive in court fully prepared and believed legal work required diligence rather than shortcuts. Their association began when Mr Kimomogoro joined the State Attorney’s office in Arusha and continued as both pursued private practice.
Late Mughwai was the elder brother of Chadema chairman, Mr Tundu Lissu. Relatives remembered him as a source of guidance and unity within the family. He was a widower and leaves five children.
