REMEMBER 1980’S IMMIGRANT SONG BY SENEGALESE YOUSSOU N’DOUR?

Arusha News12 months ago12 months ago05 mins

When an Arusha News reader made contact last week regarding a huge headline item here in London, I recalled a wonderful African tune released in 1984. In the second verse of Immigrés, celebrated Senegalese musician, Youssou N’dour, wails in Wolof: “Uzin bittim reew na fa nekk dekk nu fa Mujj u mujj yay danuy nibbi…

IMPORTANT LESSONS FROM MY TANDALA SCHOOL

Arusha News12 months ago12 months ago05 mins

The year was 1965. I had just joined what was then known as Tandala Lutheran Church Boys’ Boarding Middle School — quite a mouthful — perched on one of the higher slopes of the Mount Livingstone (Kipengere) ranges, in what is now Makete District, Njombe Region. I was one of only three pupils, out of…

UPRIGHT THINKING — A FARMER’S NIGHT AT THE OPERA

Arusha News1 year ago1 year ago04 mins

If you had asked whether I could ever imagine myself in the audience of an opera, I’d have said yes – only in a dream. Last weekend, that dream became reality as I sat in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, waiting for the opening act of The Queen of Spades, an opera by the renowned Russian composer…

THE DAY WE RECEIVED LECTURE FROM MWALIMU NYERERE — THE PALAVER

The other week, Bongolanders observed Nyerere Day — marking twenty-six years since the founding father passed away on October 14, 1999. Although I had several brief encounters with the Father of our Nation during my professional life, I vividly recall one that took place in 1978. At the time, I was a second-year student at…

THAT FAMOUS SCENT, PREACHERS ON LONDON STREETS

Arusha News1 year ago1 year ago07 mins

“Repent NOW!” The man is shouting and screaming like hundred cars shooting up this high road in South London. “When you are in the coffin it shall be too late! Hell fire awaits you!.” As the man waves his hands, gesticulating with fervour, by his side a woman, loyally, hands out leaflets. “Jesus loves you….

ACKNOWLEDGING IGNORANCE IS A SIGN OF A WISDOM

Arusha News1 year ago1 year ago04 mins

Many of us are really scared to say: I do not know, I am not sure of this or that, let me find the right answer. They will try to respond to every question. Parading their knowledge becomes a part of life. When I reflect on this kind of behaviour, I realise that I too…

Thirty-seven years after crossing the finish line Thirty-seven years after crossing the finish line as the New York City Marathon champion, Tanzania’s Juma Ikangaa is returning to the city that holds one of his proudest sporting memories.

Ikangaa is among marathon legends invited to mark the 50th anniversary of the race’s five-borough course, with this year’s marathon scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, November 1, 2026.
He left for  New York on Wednesday night.
“I am excited to be part of this 50th anniversary. It has reminded me of my proud victory of 1989,” Ikangaa told The Arusha News from New York. “It is great to touch base on old memories”, he added.

On November 5, 1989, Ikangaa completed the marathon in two hours, eight minutes and one second, winning the men’s title and setting a course record. His performance placed Tanzania at the centre of attention on one of distance running’s biggest stages.

His New York triumph crowned a distinguished international career that included victories in Melbourne in 1983 and 1984, Tokyo in 1984 and 1986, Fukuoka in 1986 and Beijing in 1987.
Now, the invitation offers him an opportunity to revisit the setting of that triumph and join others whose achievements helped shape the race’s history.

Among the former champions for the festivities is American Bill Rodgers from Newington, Connecticut. Rodgers won four consecutive New York City Marathon titles from 1976 to 1979, beginning with the first race through all five boroughs.
The marathon began in 1970 within Central Park. In 1976, it expanded into a citywide race through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx—the transformation being celebrated this year.

Nearly 60,000 runners are expected to tackle the 42.195-kilometre course before finishing in Central Park.
For Ikangaa, the journey back brings an opportunity to celebrate a race that became part of his own story—and a victory that put Tanzania in its record books.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds blew roofs Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds blew roofs of about 30 houses in Katesh, Hanang District, Manyara Region, on October 24.

According to reports from Katesh, the storm struck suddenly, damaging homes and affecting over 30 households.
One of the affected residents, Mr John Amsi, said he was inside his house when strong winds, accompanied by thunder and lightning, blew off his roof.

Hanang District Commissioner (DC),  Mr Vita Kawawa,  subsequently visited the affected homes to inspect the damage and provide emergency shelter and food to the affected families.

The storm comes amid warnings from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) that the October–December Vuli rainy season is expected to be strong, influenced by El Niño, bringing normal to above-normal rainfall across several regions, including Manyara.

The authority has urged communities and relevant agencies to prepare for possible flooding and damage to infrastructure.

Tanzania has strengthened health surveillance at i Tanzania has strengthened health surveillance at its borders following confirmed Ebola infections in neighbouring Kenya, with additional travel-history checks reported at Namanga and the Horohoro–Lunga Lunga crossing on the Tanga–Mombasa route.

National measures introduced on October 17 included mandatory health declarations, temperature screening, sanitation and 21-day monitoring of travellers assessed as being at high risk of infection.

According to the Health Ministry, Tanzania has not reported an Ebola outbreak. media reports indicate that the ministry has mobilised more than 500 medical personnel, alongside screening equipment and other supplies, to strengthen surveillance at entry points.

The Arusha Regional Medical Officer (RMO), Dr Alex Massawe, also assured The Arusha News that the region was so far completely safe. In Tanga, a ministry update highlighted cross-border movement through Horohoro–Lunga Lunga as a key reason for strengthening preparedness. Public Health Education Coordinator, Dr Francis Marwa, emphasised the importance of early preparations.

In Kilimanjaro Region, Health Minister, Mr Mohamed Mchengerwa,  directed officials at the Holili and Tarakea border posts to intensify traveller screening during a recent visit to Rombo District. The heightened precautions come as Kenya recorded nine confirmed Ebola cases and two deaths by October 23.

According to Kenya’s Health Cabinet, Mr Aden Duale, as of October 26, 2026, Kenya had 98 people under observation in quarantine for possible Ebola exposure, while 20 had been released after completing 21 days of monitoring without developing symptoms. The country had recorded nine confirmed Ebola cases, including two deaths, with the remaining seven patients stable and receiving treatment. Those released were symptom-free contacts, rather than recovered Ebola patients.

The Democratic Republic of  Congo (DRC) remains the epicentre of the outbreak, which began in May. By October 23, the country had recorded 9,816 confirmed infections and 4,757 deaths, according to the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
