In today’s world of human resource management (HR) and employment law, the issue of wage payment has become of great importance.
Many employers and employees often confuse two important concepts: Pay Equality and Pay Equity.
While Tanzanian labour laws and International Labour Organisation (ILO) guidelines continue to emphasise Pay transparency, it is important for employers to understand the difference between the two:
Pay equality: This means giving male and female workers the same pay for doing the same work.
Pay equity: This goes further—it means providing equal pay for work of equal value, even if the responsibilities or job positions are different.
What should employers do?
Conduct a job evaluation: Make sure your salary structure considers experience,
skills and job contribution rather than gender or preference.
Review HR and payroll policies: Ensure payroll systems comply with the Industrial Relations Act and the Private Sector to avoid legal disputes and discrimination complaints.
