Sudan remains trapped in one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises, as reports from El Fasher and across Darfur reveal mass killings, abductions, sexual violence, enforced disappearances and widespread attacks on civilians, according to Mr Adama Dieng, the African Union (AU) Special Envoy for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Mass Atrocities.
The atrocities increasingly display the hallmarks of genocidal violence, including the deliberate targeting of communities, the destruction of livelihoods and the use of terror against entire populations.
With fears that similar patterns could spread to areas such as El Obeid, urgent action is needed, he warned. Mr Dieng added that Africa and the international community must strengthen civilian protection, secure humanitarian access, intensify diplomatic efforts and hold perpetrators accountable.
“Silence is not neutrality; it risks complicity. Sudan’s people need solidarity, justice and decisive action,” he writes in his new exclusive fortnightly column, Africa’s Conscience, which debuts in this edition of The Arusha News.
