TANZANIA FILLS THREE VACANT EALA SEATS

FROM THE ARUSHA NEWS REPORTER IN DODOMA

The National Assembly has elected three new members to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) during a sitting held in Dodoma on Monday, May 4, 2026, filling vacancies in Tanzania’s regional delegation.

The newly elected representatives are Mr Cosato Chumi, Ms Fatuma Kange and Mr Kambarage Wasira.

The three seats fell vacant after former EALA members from Tanzania left the Assembly upon assuming new responsibilities within government and Parliament, prompting the need for fresh elections to maintain the country’s full representation at the regional level.

The trio is expected to be sworn-in during the upcoming EALA budget session scheduled to take place in Arusha this June, according to EALA sources.

During the session, the new Secretary General (SG) of the East African Community (EAC), Amb Stephen Mbundi, will also be sworn-in. Amb Mbundi was appointed to the position during the recent 25th EAC Summit of Heads of State in Arusha for a five-year single term. He has replaced Ms Veronica Nduva from Kenya.

EALA, the legislative organ of the EAC, is responsible for enacting laws, approving the Community’s budget and overseeing regional affairs affecting partner states.
