As the weather cools and temperatures drop, so doe As the weather cools and temperatures drop, so does garden productivity. Gardeners can choose to take one of two approaches: Focus on growing plants that are better suited for cooler weather or make adjustments to your garden environment to reverse the effects of the cold weather.

Plants that fare well in cooler weather are root vegetables, peas, most leafy vegetables, broccoli and cauliflower. These plants in fact benefit from cooler weather as their growth is slowed down, allowing for optimal development.

Root vegetables will be able to form larger roots and bulbs, leafy greens can get bigger with reduced heat stress and broccoli and cauliflower are no longer prone to going to seed.
The most effective way to make adjustments to your garden in order to alter your growing environment is to put up a greenhouse but that can be expensive.

Alternatively, you can create a smaller greenhouse by placing halved plastic gallon bottles with ventilation holes over plants. You can also warm the soil by mulching your garden beds.

The images emerging from South Africa are heartbre The images emerging from South Africa are heartbreaking and alarming.

African men, women and children fleeing violent mobs. Migrant workers hiding in the mountains. Families seeking refuge in public buildings. Shops ransacked. Homes burned. Lives shattered. Citizens from other African countries abandoning everything they own in a desperate search for safety. Reports already speak of lives lost, and hundreds perhaps thousands seeking repatriation out of fear.

For anyone who has dedicated a lifetime to preventing genocide and other mass atrocities, these scenes are not only painful they are ominous. They remind us of a truth history has taught again and again: Mass atrocities do not begin with mass killings.

They begin with words. With stereotypes. With the normalisation of hatred. With the quiet acceptance of narratives that portray human beings as threats simply because of their nationality, their accent, or their place of birth.

Whenever political leaders, public figures or organised groups scapegoat vulnerable communities for unemployment, crime, economic hardship or social frustration, they plant the seeds of violence. And South Africa perhaps more than any other nation knows where such seeds can lead.

This is the country that gave the world Nelson Mandela, a man who taught humanity that our shared dignity is greater than our divisions. It is the nation whose struggle against apartheid inspired millions across Africa and beyond a struggle built on the rejection of exclusion, discrimination and dehumanisation. That is why the current wave of xenophobic violence is not merely a South African tragedy.

It is an African tragedy. It is profoundly painful to witness African brothers and sisters being hunted, humiliated and driven from their homes on African soil. It is even more painful that such acts occur in the very country that once symbolised reconciliation, dignity and human solidarity.

One cannot help but ask: What would Mandela think if he saw fellow Africans fleeing for their lives in the nation whose freedom was secured through the solidarity of Africa?

The New Arusha Hotel, today known as Four Points b The New Arusha Hotel, today known as Four Points by Sheraton Arusha, The Arusha Hotel, is one of East Africa’s most iconic landmarks, blending over a century of history with modern hospitality.

Its story begins in 1894, when a modest mud-walled guesthouse, sometimes called Bloom’s Hotel, was built to cater to traders and settlers in what was then German East Africa. Strategically placed near the site of the Clock Tower later dubbed the halfway point between Cape Town and Cairothe inn quickly became an anchor for travellers passing through the frontier town of Arusha.

In 1927, American coffee planter and entrepreneur Kenyon Painter invested heavily to build a larger, more elegant property. Officially named the New Arusha Hotel, it opened with a glittering ball attended by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII. With its spacious rooms, polished interiors, and manicured gardens, the hotel symbolised Arusha’s growing importance as a commercial and travel hub.

By the 1930s and 1940s, the New Arusha Hotel was firmly established as the safari capital of East Africa. Hunting parties, colonial officials and adventurers from Europe and America converged here before setting off on expeditions to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Kilimanjaro.

The property was rebuilt in 1953 with stronger stone and concrete, a sign of resilience after decades of wear. Its reputation grew further in 1962, when Hollywood arrived. John Wayne and the cast of Hatari! used the hotel during filming, turning the Hatari Bar into a lasting tribute to that glamorous era.

Following extensive renovations in the 2000s, the hotel once again reinvented itself. In 2017, it joined Marriott International, reopening as Four Points by Sheraton Arusha, The Arusha Hotel. Today it offers more than 114 guest rooms, lush gardens, fine dining at the Parachichi Restaurant, and the legendary Hatari Bar.

The hotel has hosted princes, presidents, celebrities and countless travellers. But beyond the famous names, it remains a place where history lives in the walls, where the past meets the present, and where Arusha’s role as the gateway to adventure is celebrated every day.

East African countries have been warned to take me East African countries have been warned to take measures to strengthen preparedness for adverse weather conditions, as leading climate centres predict that El Niño patterns were likely to develop in 2026 and bring disruptive rainfall later in the year.

The World Meteorological Organisation said there was high likelihood of El Niño developing between June and August 2026, with the event likely to continue into the final months of the year. Other major climate centres, including NOAA and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, have also indicated a strong possibility for El Niño conditions.
For Tanzania and other East African countries, the main concern is during the October to December short rains when heavier than usual rains in parts of the region could occur, raising the risks of flooding, damaged roads, crop losses, landslides and outbreaks of water-borne diseases.

However, scientists caution that El Niño does not affect all areas in the same way. Some places may receive excessive rainfall, while others may still experience dry spells, depending on local conditions and other climate systems.
Climate experts have advised governments, farmers and communities to follow carefully updated weather forecasts from national meteorological agencies and regional centres such as ICPAC.

Authorities are also being urged to improve drainage, protect vulnerable settlements, issue timely farming advisories and prepare emergency response systems. While some reports have warned of possible “super El Niño” conditions, official agencies say it was still too early to conclude that 2026 will be the worst year on record.
