Tanzania has once again cemented its position as a tourism heavyweight after it was named Africa’s Leading Destination 2026 at the World Travel Awards ceremony for the third consecutive year.
The award was announced at the World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony held in Zanzibar on August 28, 2026, extending the country’s winning streak after taking the same title in 2024 and 2025.
The country beat several established tourism destinations, including Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Rwanda and Botswana, to retain the coveted continental title.
Tanzania’s success extended beyond the overall destination award. The Serengeti National Park was named Africa’s Leading National Park 2026 and Africa’s Leading ‘Big 5’ National Park 2026, while Kilimanjaro National Park took the title of Africa’s Leading Mountain National Park 2026.
Tanzania is home to the largest population of lions in the wild.
Zanzibar too was recognised as Africa’s Leading Beach Destination 2026 while the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) was named Africa’s Leading Tourist Board 2026 for the fifth year in a row.
The latest honours are expected to further boost Tanzania’s international tourism profile and strengthen promotion of the country’s wildlife, beaches, mountains and cultural attractions to a global clientele.
