The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) is awaiting a comprehensive report on an accident in which four Swiss tourists and their Tanzanian driver escaped unhurt unhurt after their safari vehicle plunged into the Mara River in Serengeti National Park, about a fortnight ago.
TATO Executive Director, Mr Elirehema Maturo, told The Arusha News that the association would give its response to the incident once it receives a comprehensive report establishing exactly what transpired.
The accident occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, in the Kogatende area of northern Serengeti, one of Tanzania’s busiest wildlife-viewing locations during the annual wildebeest migration.
The four Swiss tourists were travelling in a Land Cruiser when the vehicle went over the riverbank and plunged into the Mara River. Fortunately, all four tourists and their Tanzanian driver were safely rescued, with no serious injuries reported.
Despite the frightening ordeal, the tourists continued with their planned holiday in Tanzania, later travelling to Zanzibar where they are spending the remaining days of their visit.
Meanwhile, the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle plunging into the river.
The accident happened at the height of the wildebeest migration season, when thousands of international visitors travel to northern Serengeti to witness the dramatic crossings of wildebeest and other animals along the Mara River.
Kogatende and other popular river-crossing points can attract large numbers of safari vehicles as guides position their guests to witness the migration.
The incident is consequently expected to renew attention within the tourism industry on visitor safety, professional guiding, vehicle movements and management of safari traffic around busy river-crossing points during the peak migration season.
