YOUNG DOCTOR COMMITS SUICIDE

A wave of deep sorrow and sombre mood have engulfed Longuo Ward community members in Moshi District, Kilimanjaro Region, following the tragic death of 30‑year‑old paediatrician, Dr Magreth Joseph Swai, a promising young doctor serving at Kibosho Hospital.

Dr Magreth was found dead at her home on the night of July 10, 2025 – in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide linked to long‑term mental health struggle. Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC), Saimon Maigwa, told the media that Dr Magreth was found in her bedroom around 9:00 p.m., having apparently hanged herself using a television antenna cable tied to a metal bar above her door.

“It is true that the incident occurred. Preliminary investigations indicate that she had been struggling with mental health issues for a long time,” said Commander Maigwa.

Neighbours and relatives described Dr Magreth as kind‑hearted, soft‑spoken and deeply committed to her profession. However, those close to her revealed that her struggle with psychological distress began several years ago, during the rigorous years of her clinical training.

“She was always smiling, always caring for others – but we never imagined how much pain she was hiding,” said a neighbour, her voice trembling.

Dr Magreth’s passing has prompted a large conversation in Kilimanjaro Region about mental health awareness, especially among healthcare workers, who are often expected to be pillars of strength while silently battling immense stress and emotional anguish of their own.

As investigations continue, local leaders and healthcare professionals are calling for increased mental health support services – not just for patients, but for doctors, nurses and caregivers who serve them.

The community members of Moshi mourn a bright light extinguished far too soon.
