ARUSHA, KILI TO REMAIN WARM JAN, FEB

By The Arusha News Reporter

Arusha is generally expected to experience warm weather accompanied by occasional rains in late January and throughout February 2026 in line with the region’s typical seasonal climate patterns, according to the weatherman.

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) indicates that northern Tanzania usually experiences a transitional weather phase during January and February ahead of the long rains that normally set on in March. During this period, conditions are largely dry with intermittent showers, particularly in the afternoons or evenings.

Daytime temperatures in Arusha are forecast to range between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, while night-time temperatures are expected to remain cooler, averaging between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius due to the city’s elevated altitude. Days are likely to be sunny to partly cloudy during mornings and early afternoons with cloud cover increasing later in the day.

Late January falls within this transitional phase and residents should expect isolated showers that are generally light to moderate and short-lived, with most days remaining dry. February is expected to follow a similar pattern with a moderate chance of rainfall on some days, but without the prolonged or heavy downpours typical of the March–May long rainy season.

Agricultural experts advise farmers to take advantage of the intermittent showers to prepare land and begin early planting of short-season crops where conditions permit while remaining cautious due to the uneven distribution of rainfall. Practices such as mulching and timely irrigation may help reduce heat stress on soils during extended sunny periods. Livestock keepers are also encouraged to ensure adequate water supplies and provide shade for animals during peak daytime temperatures.

Residents are advised to remain mindful of heat exposure, especially during midday hours and to maintain proper hydration. Motorists are urged to exercise caution during and after rainfall, as sudden showers may create slippery road conditions, particularly in the evenings. Clearing drainage channels around homes is recommended to prevent localised water pooling during brief downpours, while fluctuating dust levels between dry and wet conditions may affect individuals prone to allergies.

Around the nearby slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, weather conditions are expected to vary with altitude, ranging from cooler temperatures to increased chilly cloud cover at higher elevations, particularly during the afternoons.

Overall, authorities note that weather conditions during the period remain largely favourable for daily activities, agriculture, travel and tourism while advising residents and farmers to stay alert to localised weather changes as the region approaches the long rains expected to begin in March.
