Planning to visit Tanzania? Besides your passport, suitcase and safari camera, there may soon be one more thing on your travel checklist, travel insurance!

Under the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026, foreign nationals entering Mainland Tanzania through air, sea or land borders are required to have inbound travel insurance. The prescribed premium is the equivalent of US$44 per visitor, with cover valid for up to 92 days from arrival.

However, visitors should distinguish between the enactment of the regulation and their actual commencement and enforcement.

Travellers should therefore confirm the current implementation requirements before travelling

The insurance is designed to provide protection for emergencies such as medical treatment, rescue services, loss of luggage and repatriation where necessary.

This may sound familiar to visitors to Zanzibar, which introduced a similar mandatory insurance requirement in 2024.

So, before you pack your safari hat and sunglasses, remember: Your suitcase may be ready, but is your insurance also ready? After all, the only surprise you want on your Tanzanian holiday is seeing a lion not discovering you forgot your insurance!
