Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world have different skin colours? The answer lies not in race but in evolution. Modern humans (Homo sapiens) originated in Africa more than 200,000 years ago. Our early ancestors lived under the intense tropical sun, where ultraviolet (UV) radiation is strong throughout the year.
Over many thousands of years, natural selection favoured individuals with darker skin because the pigment melanin provided protection against harmful UV rays. Melanin acts as the body’s natural sunscreen, protecting the skin and helping to preserve important nutrients such as folate, which is essential for healthy pregnancies and normal cell growth.
As groups of humans gradually migrated northwards into Europe and Asia they encountered very different conditions. Sunlight became weaker, particularly during the long winters.
Under these circumstances, people with lighter skin had an advantage because more UVB rays could penetrate the skin, allowing the body to produce sufficient vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, a healthy immune system and many other bodily functions.
This change did not happen overnight. It took thousands of years and countless generations for natural selection to gradually favour different skin colours in different environments.
Skin colour is not the only example of human adaptation. Another fascinating example is the ability to digest fresh cow’s milk in adulthood.
Most humans naturally stop producing sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase after childhood, making them lactose intolerant. However, in communities that kept cattle and relied on milk for many generations, genetic changes allowed adults to continue producing lactase. This adaptation became common because it improved people’s chances of survival in areas where milk was an important source of nutrition.
These examples remind us that our genes and environment are constantly interacting. Climate, sunlight, food, infectious diseases and even the microorganisms living in our intestines have influenced human evolution. The same principles apply to plants, animals and all other living organisms.
Today, our environment is changing more rapidly than ever before. Many people now spend most of their time indoors, eat highly processed foods and lead sedentary lifestyles. Although our genes have changed little over the past few thousand years, our environment has changed dramatically within just a few generations. This mismatch contributes to the growing prevalence of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, allergies and other chronic illnesses.
Understanding evolution teaches us an important lesson: our bodies are best suited to the environments in which they evolved. By choosing wholesome foods, engaging in regular physical activity, getting safe and adequate exposure to sunlight and adopting healthy lifestyles, we can work with our biology rather than against it.
Our skin colour is therefore much more than a physical characteristic. It tells a remarkable story of human adaptation, illustrating how nature has enabled our species to thrive in diverse environments across the globe.
