THE NEXT FOUR HABITS

THE HIDDEN CURRICULUM

BY DR MURTAZA HAMEER

In a previous article sometime ago, we saw how the first three habits of Steven Covey’s 7 habits could be relevant to the learner when it comes to being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, and putting first things first. Let us now see how the next four habits can also apply to the learner.

Habit four says, “Think win-win”. Learning doesn’t have to be a competition with your colleagues but rather a competition with yourself. Students can work together, study together, help one another rise in their pursuit of knowledge. Imam Ali, the 4th Caliph of Islam, once remarked, “Knowledge increases when shared, while wealth decreases when spent.”

The fifth habit states, “seek first to understand and then to be understood.” As a student, develop the habit to listen and to understand first before wanting to be understood. Listen to your teachers, learn from their knowledge and wisdom, and give them the respect that is their due. Then, you can focus on wanting to be understood. The same goes in your interaction with your peers. Seek to understand them first and then make your point to be understood. This is a skill that will serve you well life-long.

Habit six talks of “synergize” which can occur beautifully when a student discusses and works on problems with their fellow learners. When ideas area exchanged and brainstormed, the mental phenomenon that occurs dramatically enhances the learning process. Two minds are better than one!

The seventh habit is all about “sharpening the saw.” You are not a machine. As a learner, you need to make time to rejuvenate yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Take breaks from your studies when needed. Spend time with your family and loved ones. Be a part of your church or mosque activities. Spend time with your friends. Play sports. Read great works of literature, both classic and modern. Get enough sleep. Eat well. Make time to refresh your body, mind and soul.

All in all, the 7 habits are just as essential for the student as they are for the CEO of a company. They are a distillation of timeless teachings of wisdom and truth that will always be applicable and relevant.
