Displaying skills and confidence Kanana “Nana” Muthomi won this year’s Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Open in Nairobi last weekend finishing with a total score of one over par.

Muthomi, one of Kenya’s rising stars in women’s golf, put up a brave show in a closely contested championship and eventually sealed the title with an eight-shot margin over her closest challengers.

The three-day tournament attracted over 70 golfers including host Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

Meanwhile, the regional event also saw an impressive showing from Tanzanian golfers with three players finishing inside the top five.

Arusha’s Madina Idd, last year’s runner-up, led the Tanzanian charge with a strong second-place finish while Neema Olomi and Aalaa Somji also secured places among the top five.

Defending champion Joyce Wanjiru, who won the title three consecutive times, did not feature in this year’s event after turning professional earlier this year, leaving the competition wide open for new contenders.

The KLGU Open is one of the key fixtures on the amateur golf calendar in Kenya and contributes points towards the Golfer of the Year rankings making it a crucial event for emerging talents in the region.

Meanwhile, about 50 players are expected to take part in the 18-hole Vaisakhi Golf Championship today, Saturday, April 18, at the Arusha Gymkhana Club.
