Marijuana is often viewed as a harmless or “natura Marijuana is often viewed as a harmless or “natural” substance, particularly among young people. However, research suggests that its use may be associated with certain mental health risks, including psychosis—a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and perceives reality.
Psychosis is not a disease in itself, but rather a group of symptoms. It may include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not present), delusions (strong beliefs that may not be based in reality), disorganised thinking and changes in behaviour. These symptoms can be distressing for both the individual and their family, and may require medical attention.
Marijuana contains a chemical known as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which can affect how the brain processes information. Some studies suggest that THC may interfere with normal brain signalling, particularly in areas related to thinking, memory and perception. In certain individuals, this may contribute to short-term psychotic symptoms. In others—especially those with underlying vulnerability—it may be associated with longer-lasting mental health conditions.
Some groups may face a higher level of risk. These include adolescents and young adults, whose brains are still developing, as well as individuals with a personal or family history of mental health conditions such as schizophrenia. Evidence also indicates that frequent use, early exposure and higher-potency cannabis products may increase the likelihood of experiencing adverse mental health effects.
While some people report using marijuana to cope with stress or anxiety, its effects can vary. In some cases, it may lead to increased anxiety, panic episodes, mood changes or impaired judgement. Where psychotic symptoms occur, medical support may be required.

Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, has strongly w Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, has strongly warned road contractors in Arusha to complete the work within the set timelines ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) or risk being fired.

During an impromptu inspection of ongoing infrastructure works in Arusha last week, Dr Nchemba insisted that delays will not be tolerated, stressing that the government expected full compliance with construction schedules as the country prepares to co-host the continental tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda.

He noted that the road network leading to the new stadium and connecting corridors were central to the success of the tournament, as it will carry teams, officials and supporters. Authorities have already fixed May 2027 as the completion deadline for all key infrastructure, with no extensions anticipated. The AFCON is set for June-July next year.

The AFCON-related road programme in Arusha covers a broad mix of strategic upgrades. That includes more than 21 kilometres of high-standard roads linking the stadium to major routes such as the Arusha–Babati highway and the city bypass, alongside the construction of key structures, including a bridge on Essuri Road.

In addition, the wider urban road expansion programme incorporates approximately seven kilometres of a four-lane carriageway and over 60 kilometres of two-lane roads aimed at easing movement across the city.

Further works extend beyond the immediate stadium vicinity, with projects such as the Kilombero–Kisongo road and the Tengeru–Mirerani Road forming part of the efforts to de-congest traffic and improve regional connectivity. Several shorter but vital access roads around the stadium, including those in the Mateves, Bondeni, Lendita and Essuri, are also being upgraded to ensure smooth movement during the tournament.

The East African Community (EAC) Competition Autho The East African Community (EAC) Competition Authority has launched an inquiry into the proposed acquisition by AIL Holdings (Tanzania) Limited of up to 66.67 per cent of  Meticulous General Insurance Company Limited, a move that could impact fair play in Tanzania’s insurance sector.

According to a merger inquiry notice, the Authority would assess whether the deal was likely to lessen competition within the EAC or run contrary to public interest, in line with the EAC Competition Act, 2006 and the EAC Competition (Mergers and Acquisitions) Regulations, 2025.

AIL Holdings (Tanzania) Limited is owned by Kenyan Apollo Investments Limited, which has branches also  in Kenya and Uganda. Through its network, the group provides both short-term and life assurance, as well as investment support to individuals and companies.

On the other hand, Meticulous General Insurance Company Limited is a Tanzanian entity that provides a range of short-term insurance products, including motor, fire, engineering, marine, aviation and personal accident covers. It also arranges reinsurance with firms accredited by the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA).

The Authority has invited stakeholders, including competitors, suppliers and customers, to submit written representations regarding the proposed transaction before May 15, 2026. An industry observer noted that the move reflected a growing trend by regional insurance firms seeking to expand their reach across East Africa.

“Such transactions can strengthen market capacity and innovation, but regulators must carefully balance this against the risk of reduced competition and higher costs for consumers,” the observer noted. The inquiry will decide whether the deal proceeds as planned, is made conditional or  blocked altogether.

A presidential fact-finding commission established to investigate the violence that followed Tanzania’s  October 29, 2025 General Election submitted its report to President Samia Suluhu Hassan at State House on Thursday, April 23, 2026 setting out key findings on the causes and impact of the unrest.

The inquiry, chaired by former Tanzania Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman and a former Prosecutor of the UN-International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), links the violence to a combination of long-standing and immediate factors, including tensions surrounding the electoral process, governance and accountability concerns, socio-economic pressures and declining public trust in institutions.

Presenting the report, Justice Chande said the incidents were not isolated. “The events we examined were the result of accumulated grievances which, when combined with immediate triggers, led to widespread unrest,” he said.

The Commission carried out its work over a period of approximately five months, covering 11 regions and 21 districts and examining 31 locations where violence was reported.
In total, more than 63,000 people were interviewed, providing testimonies that informed the findings.

The report indicated that 518 people were killed (490 males and 28 females), including 21 children. Dar es Salaam recorded the highest number of violent deaths (182), Mwanza (90), Mbeya (80) and Arusha (53).

Two tense, low-scoring semi-finals at the St. Cons Two tense, low-scoring semi-finals at the St. Constatines Ground last week, delivered drama and set up a highly anticipated final between Telugu and MCC. In the first semi-final, Annadil Burhani ‘B’ struggled after being put in to bat, managing just 58 runs in 11 overs. Telugu’s bowlers dominated proceedings with Sandeep T returning impressive figures of 3 for 7, Vinay Kumar taking 3 for 11 and Harshil Patel finishing with 3 for 21. Taher Aziz was the lone resistance with 22 runs. Chasing a modest target, Telugu were made to work hard. Despite early setbacks, they managed to reach the total within 11 overs, thanks largely to Muthu Shankar’s 21 runs. Annadil Burhani’s bowlers fought back bravely, with Taher Nurbhai claiming 4 for 6 and Huzeifa Seifuddin taking 2 for 23, but Telugu edged through by three wickets. The second semi-final saw MCC post a competitive 102 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs against A to Z. Jainam Patel anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 57 while Dushant Singh was the standout bowler for A to Z with figures of 2 for 23.
In reply, A to Z faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 85 in 17 overs. Aneesh Jeeprson led MCC’s bowling attack with 3 for 15, supported by Jainam Patel’s 2 for 11. Mahipal Patel was the only batsman to show some resistance, scoring 17 runs, as MCC secured a 17-run victory. Telugu will now face MCC in the final next week.
