The Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sp The Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, told Parliament that construction of the new Arusha stadium—earmarked for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—has reached 77 per cent completion.
Presenting his ministry’s 2026/27 budget estimates in the National Assembly, his first since being appointed minister and elected Arusha Member of Parliament (MP), Makonda said the government was making steady progress in preparing key infrastructure for the continental tournament, which Tanzania will co-host alongside Kenya and Uganda.
He said the Parliament has approved Sh 525.3 billion budget for the upcoming financial year, with the bulk of the funds directed towards fast-tracking AFCON-related projects. Of this amount, about Sh  458.19 billion—equivalent to 87 per cent—is allocated to development expenditure, including the construction and rehabilitation of stadiums.
Makonda noted that the Arusha stadium will be one of the key venues for the tournament, adding that other major facilities are also nearing completion. The refurbishment of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam is now about 95 per cent complete while several training grounds have already been finalised.
The minister told lawmakers that the investments are not only aimed at hosting AFCON 2027 but will also leave a lasting legacy in sports development, tourism growth and economic expansion.
He further revealed that in the current financial year, the ministry has already received Sh352.94 billion, equivalent to 67.9 per cent of its approved budget, reflecting steady financing of priority projects.
However, parliamentary committees cautioned that delays in supporting infrastructure—particularly road access and surrounding facilities in Arusha—could affect readiness if not addressed in time.
The African Cup of Nations will kick off on June 19, 2027, likely in Dar es Salaam and the final is set for July 17, 2027, likely in Nairobi.

The High Court in Arusha has ordered Maina Holding The High Court in Arusha has ordered Maina Holdings Limited, a beverage distributor, to pay more than Sh 378 million to the Arusha City Council (ACC) in unpaid service levy for  2022/2023 and 2023/2024 financial years.
The order, given  by Judge Silvester Kainda, followed an out of court settlement reached between the company and the city authorities after reconciliation of accounts.
“The defendant shall further pay interest on the said sum at the rate of seven per cent per annum from the date of this judgement until full payment is made,” the judge ruled.
The service levy is a key source of revenue for local government authorities, charged on businesses operating within their jurisdictions. Court record showed that the council had initially claimed Sh 457.5 million, along with a declaration of liability, a 30 per cent penalty on the unpaid levy, interest, general damages and costs.
However, following consultations between the parties, the amount was revised to Sh 378,831,993.49, which both sides confirmed in court as the actual outstanding liability. The agreement was first indicated during earlier proceedings and reaffirmed on March 28, 2026, when the parties confirmed that the reconciled figure accurately reflected the debt owed.
In endorsing the settlement, the court declined to grant additional reliefs sought by the council, including the declaration of liability, the 30 per cent penalty, general damages and costs. The ruling effectively brings the dispute to a close, with the company now required to settle the agreed amount together with interest.

The National Assembly has elected three new member The National Assembly has elected three new members to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) during a sitting held in Dodoma on Monday, May 4, 2026, filling vacancies in Tanzania’s regional delegation.
The newly elected representatives are Mr Cosato Chumi, Ms Fatuma Kange and Mr Kambarage Wasira.
The three seats fell vacant after former EALA members from Tanzania left the Assembly upon assuming new responsibilities within government and Parliament, prompting the need for fresh elections to maintain the country’s full representation at the regional level.
The trio is expected to be sworn-in during the upcoming EALA budget session scheduled to take place in Arusha this June, according to EALA sources.
During the session, the new Secretary General (SG) of the East African Community (EAC), Amb Stephen Mbundi, will also be sworn-in.  Amb Mbundi was appointed to the position during the recent 25th EAC Summit of Heads of State in Arusha for a five-year single term.  He has replaced Ms Veronica Nduva from Kenya.
EALA, the legislative organ of the EAC, is responsible for enacting laws, approving the Community’s budget and overseeing regional affairs affecting partner states.

The National Housing Corporation (NHC) has assured The National Housing Corporation (NHC) has assured tenants facing eviction in prime down town Arusha that they will be given priority to return once redevelopment of the area has been completed.
The redevelopment project involving properties on Swahili, Sokoine and Azimio streets in the city centre, has affected more than 50 families and about 40 business premises.
During a recent meeting with tenants, NHC officials, led by the Arusha Manager, Mr Nistas Mvungi, reaffirmed that current occupants will have first priority when allocating space in the new development.
To formalise this, the corporation said letters of offer will be issued by this month, allowing tenants to confirm their interest in returning under new lease terms.
The assurance comes amid concerns raised by the tenants following the issuance of a 90-day eviction notice to pave the way for demolition and construction. Tenants appealed for the notice period to be extended to 180 days, citing challenges in securing alternative business and residential premises.
In response, NHC maintained that the legal requirement was only 30 days but said the 90-day notice was issued as a compassionate measure. The corporation added that demolition will only begin after all construction permits are obtained and tenants still on site before approvals may be granted temporary month-to-month extensions of residence.
Once permits are secured, however, tenants will be required to vacate immediately to allow the project to proceed. Tenants also sought clarification on financial and operational concerns. NHC assured them that security deposits already paid will be factored into new rental arrangements once revised rates were determined.

Marijuana is often viewed as a harmless or “natura Marijuana is often viewed as a harmless or “natural” substance, particularly among young people. However, research suggests that its use may be associated with certain mental health risks, including psychosis—a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and perceives reality.
Psychosis is not a disease in itself, but rather a group of symptoms. It may include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not present), delusions (strong beliefs that may not be based in reality), disorganised thinking and changes in behaviour. These symptoms can be distressing for both the individual and their family, and may require medical attention.
Marijuana contains a chemical known as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which can affect how the brain processes information. Some studies suggest that THC may interfere with normal brain signalling, particularly in areas related to thinking, memory and perception. In certain individuals, this may contribute to short-term psychotic symptoms. In others—especially those with underlying vulnerability—it may be associated with longer-lasting mental health conditions.
Some groups may face a higher level of risk. These include adolescents and young adults, whose brains are still developing, as well as individuals with a personal or family history of mental health conditions such as schizophrenia. Evidence also indicates that frequent use, early exposure and higher-potency cannabis products may increase the likelihood of experiencing adverse mental health effects.
While some people report using marijuana to cope with stress or anxiety, its effects can vary. In some cases, it may lead to increased anxiety, panic episodes, mood changes or impaired judgement. Where psychotic symptoms occur, medical support may be required.
